SDA Confluence Exhibit Highlights- India Flint

India Flints' the windfallmaps
Do you remember what it was like to play in the woods when you were a child and everything was possible? The air surrounded us like a protective blanket, the trees could comfort us and there were fairies everywhere.

Nature is still a source of inspiration and meditation for me. Walking into the gallery of India's work evoked that wonder of childhood.

That sacred space of now. 

This really hit me on a soul level.

 The nature printed dresses hanging from branches were ready for the waking fairies to jump into. Their many levels of draping organic cloth of every texture bespoke of non-traditional intensive sewing methods. 


Like a dress made slowly for another, for a special occasion. To be kept forever, but allowing it space to breathe. To change. 
As we do our children.

 On all sides of the spacious room, hung patched and hand sewn fabrics of such tactile lushness that I wanted to take one down and feel it's soft energy wrapped about me. 

Titles like map of longing, every time we say good-by and dawn in the forest of dreams continue the illusion of time change.

This work is more than it seems on their exquisite surfaces, coming from a respect for the plants, an honoring of the slow, and an awareness of the preciousness of our mother, earth. 

India's working techniques support her presence with this protective philosophy and yet come from extensive education and exploration of material. 

This exhibit can change awareness for those who understand. 

For those who do,  

It is a shrine.

in Holiday 'FUN' and the 'pleasures' of my studio.

I take myself out into the back woods- just under 50 acres with ajoining properties.

I can tramp around to my heart’s delight, creating mind reflections.

Being the age of my body and concerned about slippage, I take a stick cast off by a tree to steady me. 

Instantly, I am transformed into a Druid YoDa-like woman of the forest. 

Woman of the Woods

I am traversing looking for omens and other odd events to throw light on the thoughts harboring inside my mind. Do you see her in above picture?

Dare I Wander and Ponder?

The snow still beneath my feet,

Except for the occasional leap-

from my heart.

I tread a slow path though the woods.

stopping to stare and wonder. 
Stopping to gaze and ponder. 
These moments spinning

into golden memories.

Art and Meaning

This dialogue has been around the block a few times, here and in the 'art' world. 

For me, I get excited by figuring out different ways to present my techniques and photographs. Often, without my deliberate attempts my meaning comes though. When I TRY to do this, I often fail. Creation is a dialogue between what I do when I'm art making and the response to that act. I call this being in the 'flow'. Part of my artist’s statement and my teaching is about just this thing- about letting go and dancing with the materials. When this happens the art becomes the

 meaning. The sum is more than the parts.

After that, the viewer will bring their dialogue into the 'picture'. Their interpretation becomes part

of the piece. Their meaning adds to the final result. 

Art has meaning in the act of creation and in the viewing of said art.

That said, The connection with Nature and the spiritual experiences therein are very special. The confirmation given though shared experiences always reaffirms that connection and makes one want more. So out for a walk I will go, to see the rocks smiling and to feel the trees embrace.
