Leaping Point 2

Digital Fiber Collage

Created by melding several photographs. The digital fiber photograph is mounted onto free sections using heavy stabilizer coated with molding paste. Segments are creatively stitched and held together with a hand-tied bookbinding method using dyed pearl cotton.

Edges and top are sealed with UV medium and paint.

Straddling Worlds

Parting is such sweet sorrow...

 I'm leaving my mill studio of 9 years and making the final move of studio belongings today.

 It has been a good run. I loved having my own space. I would have regretted never having done this.

 But my word for this year is transition. We are building a new home and I will have a studio in it- smaller, for sure than having 2 large studios, but it mirrors my life. I'm wanting to spend time making art, not to sell, but from my heart. And time to smell the flowers- physical and mental.

 So moving on, growth, awareness of my changing needs keeps me going. Art keeps me going. Family keeps me going. This change/move is a lot of work but my eye is still keened for beauty.

 This old iron wheel cover popped when I removed the things around it. I fastened it to some random nails and wow! I love the way it looks! I will leave for the next occupant. Perhaps they may enjoy it too.

Farewell, my sweet studio, it's been good.

Pinterest- simular to Journaling

For many years I would buy art magazines because I loved to see what was happening in the general art world- trends, colors, exhibits. When I had too many, I decided to create a scrap book of my favorite pictures. At night, when I was sleepy, I would tear out pictures that tugged at my heart. (I love torn edges!) Later, watching TV or something, I would glue stick them into a journal. These became, What I call- "Windows to my Soul" books, because I found I could see a theme in my saved pix i.e. -what colors I was into, shapes, marks even art wear. It helped me see me, if you understand my meaning. 

 While I never copied any piece, they served as inspiration when I became blocked. They helped me explore my surface design and opened me to trying new approaches in presentation. This led me to my interest in collage, both physically and digitally.
I often would add my own drawings, poems, and favorite quotes.

For some years now I have stopped doing this, mainly because I didn't want to accumulate so many magazines. Piniterest has stepped nicely into it's place. I feel like I am creating scrap books again - but online- digitally- with links so I can go to visit more of each pin's source. Sometimes I feel like Alice, wandering down this site, leading to another and another site. I find it fascinating! 

I do try to site the source but I understand Pinterest embeds it now anyway, so copyright issues should not be problemanic. Also you can get a permission to pin badge for your website or blog. I think it might be a way to share your art with many more folks. 

It's the ultimate art picture book!

Saturday, June 16th from 7-9 p.m.

For centuries, artists have used fiber and a variety of techniques to produce artwork. In Europe, between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries woven tapestries would hang on the wall in place of paintings, while in the Middle East artists were creating beautifully woven rugs that depicted symbols and intricate designs. Today, besides the traditional fiber materials like cotton, linen or wool there are also synthetic materials such as plastic that are incorporated into the artwork.

The 8 New England artists that were juried into the show by Erica Licea-Kane, Assistant Professor in the Art Department and Director of the Towne Art Gallery at Wheelock College are: Sandy Gregg, Kay Hartung, Sharon McCartney, Nancy Morgan, Stacey Piwinski, Marjorie Durko Puryear, Wen Redmond and Mara Taylor.

Studio Stash

         I tend to cover every space on my studio walls. I gather, group, assemble, meet, collect, come/get together,convene, muster, rally, converge; cluster together, crowd, mass, flock together items that tickle my soul.
         I never could do the Georgia O'Keefe thing of naked walls. 
She said she liked the walls white to write her dreams on.

Altered T-Shirts

OK I'm sloppy. I paint, glue or dye and it always ends up on my shirt. I wipe my wet fingers there too. What to do? I hate to toss them but I feel like it looks so dirty- even after washing. SO!
I got out my paint brush, textile paints and did some free painting.

Simple Fun! And now I don't look sloppy! Did 4 more after these!

Taping Video Workshop at Interweave

I visited the studios of Interweave today and video workshop of 

one of my Digital Fiber Techniques; Textured Photographs.

Everyone was so kind, helpful and encouraging.

Getting into to computer tech connections.

Trying hard to stay cool.

Printing on Fabric with InkAid

Paint fabric with any InkAid. It comes in Clear, White, Red, Blue, Pearl and my fav, Bronze.
InkAid secures a fine printed image and preserves it.
I've painted cotton broadcloth with a combo of Bronze and Clear. I like the variegated result.

I've ironed my cloth onto HTC's Trans-Web. This is a terrific fusible. I love how it doesn't show with silk organza.

The photo was divided into printable size sections in Photoshop.

I sliced the cloth lengthwise into strips the width of the each printed photo.

 Next, I sliced the prepared cloth into the proper width.

I arrange the sections into a pleasing composition- out of the order in which it was painted wiht inkaid.

Next to print! The fusible becomes the carrier sheet. It can now be printed like a sheet of paper. I did iron them so they weren't curled going though the printer.

After they are printed, I decided to fuse them to sheet of stabilizer that is equal to the total size of all the pictures. This is another HTC product that they call it CutAway. It is a poly/rayon non-woven material I find extremely versatile.

 Ready to stitch my drawing lines, sew into borders and mount!
