       I love journaling. Often, when I'm working with paint, I grab my journal to do what I call a print-off.
I place the page right on top of the painted surface and it picks up a print of the colors.
Sooo Cooool!

THREE TIMES MY LIFE HAS OPENED

Three times my life has opened.

Once, into darkness and rain.

Once, into what the body carries at all times within it and starts

to remember each time it enters the act of love.

Once, to the fire that holds all.

These three were not different.

You will recognize what I am saying or you will not.

But outside my window all day a maple has stepped from her leaves

like a woman in love with winter, dropping the colored silks.

Neither are we different in what we know.

There is a door. It opens. Then it is closed. But a slip of light 

stays, like a scrap of unreadable paper left on the floor,

or the one red leaf the snow releases in March.

When do you start to listen to your own voice?
When the hollows of your check begin to sag and
you realize the gift of life?
When the voices grow so loud, you can't ignore them
anymore?
When the desire to create overtakes the desire to be 'good'?
Or when you see a process you started once upon a time and nobody thought much of it and you stopped because you listened to them?!

The construction of Open Windows is very similar to the digital work I am doing now- doing work in segments. This was done in sections with hand dyed cottons and wools. Each segment was created separately but in unison.  Intuitive curved piecing and applied "free appliqué". Encouraged hanging threads and fabric. It was not accepted in many shows then and was 'retired'. Today, I attended an opening today in Philly and there was a piece there that reminded me of this work. Maybe I should update it a bit and send it back out into the world!

Quilt Visions 2012

After viewing the entries online, the jurors met  at Visions Art Museum for two days for the challenging  task of making the final selections. I decided to change one or my mounted FiberArt pieces. Since it is already mounted, I needed to work the piece so the changes didn't interfere with the stretch that mounting requires.

I decided the edges were the parts that I didn't like the most. And the piece needed unification.

I laid a light muted glaze very quickly over the main body first. Then, I applied a opaque flake medium to three edges, in different amounts, to keep the fiber/texture quality. I went over that in paint and added a couple layers of free script, one of my trademarks.

Digital Fiber

Digital manipulated interpretations of a single photograph, created by melding the photograph, and painted fabric in photo shop. This is fused digitally and printed with an Epson 2400 on a variety of inkjet prepared fabrics. The digital fiber photographs are mounted on free sections using heavy stabilizer. Segments are creatively stitched and held together with a hand-tied bookbinding method using dyed pearl cotton.

Edges and top are sealed with UV medium and paint.

            Wen Redmond, a fabric artist for over 30 years, will offer the workshops at her studio, #336, at Salmon Falls Mills, 1 Front St. Rollinsford, NH. (Directions www.millartists.com or GPS)

            The workshops run from 10-4. The first day will start at 9:30 for registration and payment. The cost is $295.00 for entire series or $80.00 per individual class. There is a small materials fee for each workshop.

            There is only room for 6 students so register early. There will be a registration fee of ½ total cost to hold your place in the workshop. For example, if you take all four workshops a total registration fee of $147.50 is due one month aheadof workshop. Workshops will be cancelled 2 weeks in advance if it is a no go. I will return your checks if this is the case.

Fabric Printing with Georgia on My MInd

I found a carved woodcut of Georgia O'Keefe that my daughter, Theresa, made in art school. 

I decided to print some shirts. 

I used fabric screening paints but any thickish paints or dyes would work. Roll out your paint on a palette and roll onto the woodcut. You can also make a cut out of a Styrofoam tray that you usually discard. You know the ones veggies and such come in at the grocery store.

 Be careful not to apply too much paint at once or it might seep into the recessed part of the woodcut design.
You can place an old newspaper, magazine or plastic in-between the shirt front and back to protect the back from paint seepage. 

The woodcut is inked and is ready to print. Flip and position where you want it. I print on a table that has a low loft firm batting covered with cotton duck. Printing works best on a padded surface. 

I used the antique iron to press down, 'ironing' the print onto the shirt.

Ta- Daaa!

OK, 3 shirts is enough. It is fun though!
